The Vienna Hofburg Orchestra conducts magnificent classical concerts of the highest musical quality in the most beautiful concert halls in Vienna. The historical halls of Vienna’s Imperial Palace (Hofburg) shine in new splendor when the most famous masterpieces of Mozart, Lehár and Strauss are performed by the internationally renowned Vienna Hofburg Orchestra. 

The Vienna Hofburg Orchestra was founded in 1971 by the Austrian conductor Gert Hofbauer. Their original aim was to promote waltz and operetta music and bring it to the world. Today the ensemble of the famous Vienna Hofburg Orchestra consists of over 40 talented musicians who are accompanied by internationally renowned opera singers and classical ballet from Vienna’s opera houses. Visitors can expect a programme full of variety from the Viennese classical period; from waltz and operetta music to opera arias, all the fantastic classical melodies are represented. Since 2017, Giuseppe Montesano has been the musical director of the Vienna Hofburg Orchestra.

The exceptional performances of the orchestra will take the audience on a journey through Viennese classical music. In addition to arias, numerous operas and operettas are also included. Especially the fans of the wonderful works from prodigy Mozart, the King of Waltz or the virtuoso Lehár will enjoy this orchestral experience to the fullest.

The special concerts scheduled for the Christmas time of the Vienna Hofburg Orchestra start at 20:30 and end at 22:00 hours, on 22nd, 23rd , 25th and 26th of December.

Tickets are available in 3 different categories:

The Christmas season concerts on 25th and 26th December will take place in the Hofburg Palace, in the middle of the imperial city. The magnificent halls of Vienna‘s Imperial Palace provide a truly unforgettable ambience. The Hofburg's building complex was built during the course of 6 centuries, located right in the heart of Vienna's city centre. Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectural styles were incorporated into the construction and contributed to its unique appearance. Finally, the Hofburg became the imperial residence and housed the Habsburgs until 1918. The Festival Hall (Festsaal) of the Hofburg is truly majestic with its impressive ceiling paintings. The Ceremonial Hall (Zeremoniensaal) is also impressive with its magnificent marble columns. It was once the venue for court concerts and grand gala evenings under Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth.

Concerts in the Festive Hall, Hofburg Palace

The large Festsaal (festival hall) was designed as a new throne room. Construction began under Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1908 and was completed in 1923. The Festsaal is the largest hall in the Hofburg with almost 1.000 m2.

The impressive imperial ambience is created for events of spectacular style, especially concerts and balls. The room meets the highest standards, features a large permanent stage and integrated interpreter booths. The latest sound and lighting technology ensure unimpaired visual and acoustic clarity.

The New Year's Eve Concert on 31st December  will take place at the wonderful Palais Liechtenstein. The glorious Liechtenstein Garden Palace of the Princely Family of Liechtenstein is an integral part of the history of Austria's capital. As one of the most beautiful baroque palaces in Vienna, built in the early 18th century, the Garden Palace provides a wonderful setting for events. In addition, the palace with its magnificent spacious park ideally combines landscape and architecture with a private art collection of the Prince of Liechtenstein. The Hercules Hall on the first floor of the Palace awes visitors with its impressive marble columns and magnificent ceiling fresco. The Hercules Hall is the largest secular baroque hall in Vienna, extending on a surface of over 530m2, and is perfectly suited for hosting classical concerts.

The concert lasts for approximately 90 minutes, without intermission.

How to get there?

To the Vienna Hofburg Palace (Festival Hall and Ceremonial Hall), Heldenplatz 1, 1010 Vienna: take one of the tram lines 1, D, 2 or 71 until you 'll have reached the station Burgring or Dr. Karl Renner Ring. From there it is only a few minutes' walk to the Vienna Hofburg via the Heldenplatz entrance.
